Dit mémorable, apophthegme, maxime qui renferme un grand sens, une belle moralité. Les proverbes de Salomon sont autant de sentences. Un discours plein de sentences. Le style de Sénèque est rempli de sentences. Une des plus belles sentences des anciens.

Prov., Ne parler que par sentences, Affecter de parler gravement, et de dire à tout propos des moralités générales.

SENTENCE, se dit aussi d'Un jugement rendu par des juges inférieurs. Sentence contradictoire. Sentence provisoire. Sentence interlocutoire. Sentence arbitrale. Sentence juridique. Sentence par défaut. Sentence criminelle. Prononcer une sentence. Obtenir une sentence. Être condamné par sentence. Confirmer une sentence. Faire casser, faire annuler une sentence. Infirmer une sentence. Faire signifier une sentence. Appeler d'une sentence. Acquiescer à la sentence. Exécuter une sentence. Mettre une sentence à exécution. Lever une sentence. Sentence de condamnation. Il est peu usité aujourd'hui dans le langage de la jurisprudence ; on dit presque toujours, Jugement : mais, dans le langage ordinaire, il est souvent employé, particulièrement lorsqu'il s'agit d'Un jugement qui prononce la peine capitale. Une sentence de mort. On lui lut sa sentence. Sa sentence lui fut prononcée. Il écouta sa sentence avec calme.

Fig., Appeler de la sentence de quelqu'un, Ne pas vouloir s'en tenir à sa décision, à son jugement. J'appelle de votre sentence, ou simplement, J'en appelle.

SENTENCE, se dit aussi Des jugements rendus dans les différents degrés de la juridiction ecclésiastique, et dont l'appel est toujours recevable, à moins qu'il n'y ait trois sentences conformes. Sentence du primat, de l'évêque.

SENTENCE, en parlant De quelques tribunaux des pays étrangers, se dit de Toutes les décisions, de tous les jugements qui s'y rendent. Les sentences de la rote.

SENTENCE, se dit aussi Du jugement de Dieu contre les pécheurs. Les pécheurs recevront leur sentence au jour du jugement. Lorsque Dieu prononcera la sentence contre les pécheurs.
