L'une des divisions ou subdivisions dans lesquelles se partage une collection, un compte, un ouvrage, un livre, un traité, etc. Ce livre est divisé en tant de sections. Chapitre premier, seconde section. Section seconde, chapitre premier. Il a divisé son livre par sections, en sections.   Il se dit quelquefois Des divisions d'une ville, d'un tribunal, d'un conseil, etc. Au commencement de la révolution, Paris fut divisé en quarante-huit sections. La cour de cassation est divisée en trois sections : la section des requêtes, la section civile, et la section criminelle. Les sections d'un collége électoral. Le conseil d'État est partagé en sections, que l'on nomme Comités.   Il signifie, en termes de Théorie militaire, La moitié d'un peloton ou d'une compagnie d'infanterie. Dans les manoeuvres, lorsqu'on rompt le peloton, le capitaine commande la première section, et le lieutenant la seconde. Rompre par section. Se former en colonne par sections.

SECTION, signifie aussi, Coupe, endroit où une chose est coupée, tranchée. Dans cette acception, on l'emploie surtout en termes de Géométrie, et il se dit Des parties de l'espace où des lignes, des plans, des surfaces courbes se coupent mutuellement. Deux surfaces qui se rencontrent ont pour section une ligne droite, ou une ligne courbe, ou un point. Une surface et un solide peuvent avoir pour section une surface. La section d'un solide par un plan, etc.   Sections coniques, cylindriques, se dit particulièrement Des diverses figures qui naissent des différentes coupes d'un cône, d'un cylindre.  Point de section, L'endroit où deux lignes s'entrecoupent.
