Il ne se met point ici comme nom de peuple, ni de pays ; mais il a différents usages dans notre langue. La langue latine, La langue des anciens Romains. Un discours latin, une harangue latine, Un discours, une harangue en langue latine. Mot latin, Mot de la langue latine. Dictionnaire grec et latin, latin et français, Dictionnaire où le sens des mots grecs est expliqué en latin, etc.

Fig., Le pays latin, Le quartier de Paris où sont la plupart des colléges.

Fam., Cela sent le pays latin, se dit De tout ce qui retient un certain air de collége.  L'Église latine, Toute l'Église d'Occident, par opposition à l'Église grecque ou d'Orient. Les Pères de l'Église latine. On dit de même, Le rit latin, Le rit de l'Église romaine. On appelle aussi substantivement Latins, Ceux qui sont de l'Église latine. Les Latins et les Grecs diffèrent de croyance et de pratique en plusieurs points.   En termes de Marine, Voile latine, Voile faite en forme de triangle. Cette espèce de voile est plus en usage sur la Méditerranée que sur l'Océan.

LATIN, est aussi substantif, au masculin, et signifie, La langue latine. Enseigner, apprendre le latin. Savoir bien le latin. Parler latin. Composer, écrire en latin, en bon latin. Mauvais latin. Latin de Cicéron. Ce latin n'est pas pur.

Prov. et pop., Du latin de cuisine, De fort mauvais latin.

Fig. et fam., Il est au bout de son latin, se dit D'un homme qui ne sait plus où il en est, qui ne sait plus que dire, que faire. Il y a perdu son latin, se dit D'un homme qui a travaillé inutilement à quelque chose, qui y a perdu son temps et sa peine.
